Easy Apple Pear Spread/Compote

My kids love this recipe, they can eat it by the spoonful. This recipe doesn’t contain any added sugars and is naturally sweetened by the apples and the pears; it tastes so good! You may serve this as a side, with cookies, yogurt, oatmeal, or pancakes.

This recipe can be pureed or mashed with a fork as thick or as thin as you’d prefer it to be.

One way I like to serve this recipe is with my Spinach Cookies. I like to spread some of this Apple Pear recipe in-between two spinach cookies to help create a sandwich-my kids enjoy those sandwich cookies.

List of Ingredients:

apples, pears, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, and water (not shown here).

Step-By-Step Instructions:

Wash, peel, and cut the ends off from the apples and the pears.

Remove the cores and cut them into small pieces. Measure 1 and 1/2 cups for the apples and 1 cup for the pears. Then, place them in a small pot.

Add the lemon juice, ground cinnamon, and water

Note: if the pears aren’t ripe enough and would like to turn this mixture into a compote (where the mixture will have some liquid left behind and won’t be as thick as a puree), then add about 1-2 tablespoons more of water- the amount of water being added also depends on how ripe your pears are. Add 1 tablespoon now and add more (1 tablespoon at a time) if needed.

Stir and cover it with a lid. Allow them to cook, stirring a few times over medium-low heat, until they are fork tender, meaning a fork can easily pierce through them (about 10-15 minutes).

Note: the fruits will release some liquid (if the pear is ripe it might release more liquid). Once the fruits are fork tender and have cooled, may transfer them to a bowl and mash them with a fork until you have reached your desired consistency. OR

May place the cooled apples and pears in a blender and blend until they’re pureed.

Enjoy immediately or transfer to a glass food storage container, cover with its lid, and keep it in the refrigerator .

Easy Apple Pear Spread/Compote

Save Recipe

The apples and pears provide such a delicious flavor without the added sugars or added sweetness. This recipe is great to serve over yogurt, chia pudding, pancakes, cookies, or just about anything. Additionally, once cooked and cooled, this recipe can be mashed with a fork until you have reached your desired consistency, or can blend it in a blender to create a smooth puree-like consistency.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups of small diced apples-washed, peeled, ends cut off and core removed (I used Gala apples)
  • 1 cup of small diced pears-washed, peeled, ends cut off and core removed (I used Bartlett pears)
  • 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon water (for a thicker consistency, leave the water out)

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel, and cut the ends off from the apples and the pears. Also, remove the cores and cut them into small pieces. Measure 1 and 1/2 cups for the apples and 1 cup for the pears. Then, place them in a small pot.
  2. Add the lemon juice, water, and ground cinnamon.
  4. Stir and cover it with a lid. Allow them to cook, stirring a few times over medium-low heat, until they are fork tender, meaning a fork can easily pierce through them (about 10-15 minutes).
  5. Note: the fruits will release some liquid (if the pear is ripe it might release more liquid). Once the fruits are fork tender and have cooled, may transfer them to a bowl and mash them with a fork until you have reached your desired consistency. OR
  6. May place the cooled apples and pears in a blender and blend until they’re pureed.
  7. Enjoy immediately or transfer to a glass food storage container, cover with its lid and keep it in the refrigerator .

Notes

  • For the sandwich cookies, I spread some of the Apple Pear recipe in-between two spinach cookies to help create a sandwich.
  • Once the fruit has softened/is fork tender and you don’t want the mixture to be too thin or to have a lot of liquid, then allow the mixture to simmer (with the lid off) for about 3-5 minutes. This will help the liquid evaporate.
  • If needed, may add some water (a tablespoon at a time) to help thin out the mixture.
  • If the pears aren’t ripe enough and would like to turn this mixture into a compote (where the mixture will have some liquid left behind and won’t be as thick as a puree), then add about 1-2 tablespoons more of water- the amount of water being added also depends on how ripe your pears are. Add 1 tablespoon now and add more (1 tablespoon at a time) if needed.
